Bookseller

We are looking for an enthusiastic, experienced bookseller, who has deep knowledge across a variety of genres, fiction and nonfiction. This individual must be comfortable articulating book recommendations to customers, can work well both as part of a team and independently, and has a positive, approachable demeanor. We are looking for part-time staff, available to work 18-24 hours per week consistently, including alternating weekends.

Responsibilities include: positive interaction with customers both in person and on the phone, processing point-of-sale transactions, organizing and merchandising displays, shelving accurately, gift wrapping, ensuring safe and healthy environmental conditions (including cleaning, straightening), and occasionally assisting at evening store events.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Bookstore/Book Industry experience is strongly preferred
  • High comfort level interacting with people of all ages, especially about books, community, and culture
  • Boundless love for books and reading
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Readable penmanship
  • Ability to follow directions and work as part of an experienced team
  • Takes initiative and is detail-oriented
  • Availability to work 18-24 hours/week (4-6/hr shifts), 4-5 consecutive days/wk preferred, including weekend shifts
  • Must be able to provide current and relevant professional references

Essential Functions:

  • Customer Service - ensure a positive, inclusive, and engaging customer experience
  • Provide appropriate guidance and recommendations to customers – requires general overview knowledge of curated assortments and deeper knowledge of both fiction and nonfiction
  • Maintain and organize inventory on shelves, ensuring stacks are neat, organized, correctly placed and alphabetized.
  • Process transactions at point-of-sale
  • Staff evening events on occasion
  • Perform additional tasks as requested, including visual merchandising (table and/or window presentations), creative production (posters/signage, chalkboard), and more
  • Climb up and down a stepladder as needed; stand for long periods of time; lift and carry up to 20 lbs
  • Gift wrap as needed
