Join us on Tuesday, July 23rd, at 7pm when bestselling author AMY STEWART comes to the store to present her new book The Tree Collectors: Tales of Arboreal Obsession. Amy will read from and discuss her book and will sign copies after the presentation. Her book includes fifty gorgeously illustrated vignettes of remarkable people whose lives have been transformed by their obsessive passion for trees, from the New York Times bestselling author of The Drunken Botanist. (Amy's photo by Terrance McNally).

This is a free event, but you must pre-register on Eventbrite or in the store to ensure seating.  Click Here to preorder a copy of The Tree Collectors.

The Japanese practice of forest bathing, shinrin-yoku, changes the levels of stress and pleasure hormones in the body, decreasing cortisol and increasing serotonin. And if being around one tree feels good, imagine how a hundred trees would feel. In her first botanical nonfiction in more than a decade, Amy Stewart brings us captivating stories of people who spend their lives collecting trees and asks them: what drives one to collect something as enormous, majestic, and deeply-rooted as a tree?

In her gentle, intimate, slyly humorous way, Stewart brings fifty of these people to life, organizing their stories into categories. There are the community builders--like Shyam Sunder Paliwal who, after the death of his daughter, began a movement in his Rajasthan village to plant 111 trees whenever a girl was born--who do the remarkable work of knitting people together under an arboreal canopy. There are seekers who have taken their passion for trees around the world, or even into space. There are visionaries--the former poet laureate, W.S. Merwin, who planted a tree a day for over three decades, until he had turned a barren estate into a palm sanctuary. And there are healers--like Joe Hamilton, who plants trees on land passed down to him by his formerly enslaved great-grandfather--who have found a way to heal their own lives, the lives of others, or even wounds of the past, by planting trees.

Vivid watercolor portraits of these extraordinary people, populate this lively compendium along with with sidetrips to investigate more about trees, including: famous tree collections, necessary terms, and even "tips for unauthorized forestry." This book will be a gift for the hundreds of thousands of readers who have come to Amy's previous nature books and a delightful, informative, and often poignant treat for a whole new audience.

AMY STEWART is the New York Times bestselling author of The Drunken Botanist, Wicked Plants, and several other popular nonfiction titles about the natural world. She’s also written seven novels in her beloved Kopp Sisters series, based on the true story of one of America’s first female deputy sheriffs. She lives in Portland, Oregon.

August 2024

Join us on Tuesday, August 6th at 6:30pm when Oakland author HAYLEY DENNINGS comes to the store to launch her Young Adult romantasy novel This Ravenous Fate. In this fantasy of Jazz Age Harlem, where warring factions of oligarchs, gangsters, and vampires vie for power and control, a young vampire and the girl who once betrayed her are drawn to one another. Hayley will sign copies of her book after the presentation and will be joined in discussion by local YA author MAGGIE TOKUDA-HALL

This is a free event, but you must pre-register on Eventbrite or in the store to ensure seating.  Click here to preorder a copy of This Ravenous Fate.

It's 1926 and reapers, the once-human vampires with a terrifying affliction, are on the rise in New York. But the Saint family's thriving reaper-hunting enterprise holds reign over the city, more powerful than even the organized criminals who run the nightclubs. Eighteen year-old Elise Saint, home after five years in Paris, is the reluctant heir to the empire. Only one thing weighs heavier on Elise's mind than her family obligations: the knowledge that the Harlem reapers want her dead.

Layla Quinn is a young reaper haunted by her past. Though reapers have existed in America for three centuries, created by New World atrocities and cruel experiments, Layla became one just five years ago. The night she was turned, she lost her parents, the protection of the Saints, and her humanity, and she'll never forget how Elise Saint betrayed her.

But some reapers are inexplicably turning part human again, leaving a wake of mysterious and brutal killings. When Layla is framed for one of these attacks, the Saint patriarch offers her a deal she can't refuse: to work with Elise to investigate how these murders might be linked to shocking rumors of a reaper cure.

Once close friends, now bitter enemies, Elise and Layla explore the city's underworld, confronting their intense feelings for one another, and uncovering the sinister truths about a growing threat to reapers and humans alike.

HAYLEY DENNINGS loves stories centered on queer female characters. A recent graduate from Loyola Marymount University, she discusses books and writing on her Pages of Hayley YouTube channel. Join us at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, August 20th when the esteemed dean of Berkeley Law School ERWIN CHEMERINSKY  launches his new book NO DEMOCRACY LASTS FOREVER: How the Constitution Threatens the United States, which argues that the Constitution has become a threat to American democracy and must be dramatically changed or replaced if secession is to be avoided. Erwin will read from and discuss his book and will sign copies after the presentation.

This is a free event, but preregistration is required on Eventbrite or in the store to ensure seating.  Click Here to preorder a copy of No Democracy Lasts Forever.

Deeply troubled by the Constitution’s inherent flaws, Erwin Chemerinsky, the renowned dean of Berkeley law school, came to the sobering conclusion that our nearly 250-year-old founding document is responsible for the crisis now facing American democracy. Pointing out that just fifteen of the 11,848 amendments proposed since 1789 have passed, Chemerinsky contends that the very nature of our polarization results from the Constitution’s “bad bones,” which have created a government that no longer works or has the confidence of the public.

Yet political armageddon can still be avoided, Chemerinsky writes, if a new constitutional convention is empowered to replace the Constitution of 1787, much as the Founding Fathers replaced the outdated Articles of Confederation. If this isn’t possible, Americans must give serious thought to forms of secession—including a United States structured like the European Union—based on a recognition that what divides us as a country is, in fact, greater than what unites us.

ERWIN CHEMERINSKY is the dean of the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law. The author of Presumed Guilty, The Conservative Assault on the Constitution, and The Case Against the Supreme Court, among many other works, he lives in Oakland.

September 2024

Join us at Mrs. Dalloway's Bookstore on Thursday, September 26th at 7:00pm when noted Bay Area poet MATTHEW ZAPRUDER  comes to the store to celebrate the release of his latest poetry collection I Love Hearing Your Dreams. Matthew will read from and discuss his new work and will sign copies after the presentation. (Matthew's photo by B.A. Van Sise)

This is a free event, but you must preregister on Eventbrite or in the store to ensure seating. Click Here to preorder a copy of I Love Hearing Your Dreams

“Zapruder’s poems don’t merely attempt beauty; they attain it.” Boston Review

From one of contemporary poetry’s most playful and original minds, an enchanting and harrowing journey through the landscape of dreams and 21st century hopes and disillusions.

“Your dreams
have no hidden
agenda to be wise
they are made
to be forgotten
so something
can be known”

I Love Hearing Your Dreams is a book of reveries, of failed elegies, of “the last time that things were real” and the moments that come afterward. These are dream songs for an age of insomnia, where the poet is always awake “at that oddest hour / that does not end, / the crooked, unnumbered one” and the future seems to be “just the past in a suit / that will never be in style.” Yet dreams in Matthew Zapruder’s poems are also a place of possibility, of reality envisioned anew—sleep shows us not merely what the world is, but what it could be.

From a poet celebrated for his “razor eye for the remnants and revenants of modern culture” (The New York Times), I Love Hearing Your Dreams is a startlingly beautiful and deeply vulnerable book where lives journey into a mystifying place and emerge transformed.

MATTHEW ZAPRUDER is the author of six collections of poetry, including Come on All You Ghosts, a New York Times Notable Book of the Year; Father’s Day; Why Poetry; and Story of a Poem, a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, the William Carlos Williams Award, a May Sarton Award from the Academy of American Arts and Sciences, and a Lannan Foundation Residency Fellowship. His poetry has been adapted and performed by Gabriel Kahane and Brooklyn Rider and Attacca Quartet at Carnegie Hall and San Francisco Performances and was the libretto for Vespers for a New Dark Age, a piece by Missy Mazzoli commissioned for the Ecstatic Music Festival at Carnegie Hall. He was Guest Editor of Best American Poetry 2022, and from 2016 to 2017, he held the annually rotating position of Editor of the weekly Poetry Column for The New York Times Magazine. He lives with his wife and son in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he is editor at large at Wave Books, and teaches in the MFA in creative writing program at Saint Mary’s College of California.

Join us on Monday, September 30th at 7:00pm when legendary music producer JOE BOYD comes to the store to share his new book And the Roots of Rhythm Remain: A Journey Through Global Music. Joe will read from and discuss his book and will sign copies after the presentation.

This is a free event, but you must preregister on Eventbrite or in the store to ensure seating.  Click Here to preorder a copy of And The Roots Of Rhythm Remain

From the legendary producer of Nick Drake, R.E.M., Toots and the Maytals, and Pink Floyd and author of White Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s comes a riveting, world-spanning tour de force illuminating the artists, histories, controversies, and collaborations that shaped global music.

Paul Simon told Joe Boyd that when he first heard the accordion flourish that would open his multi-platinum album Graceland, it seemed to proclaim, “You haven’t heard this before!” Yet the 1980s “world music” boom that Simon’s album helped usher in had roots that extended back through the decades and across continents: tango on the eve of World War I, Latin dance across the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s, reggae in the ’70s, pre-War samba and pre-Beatles bossa nova, Eastern European ensembles filling capitalist concert halls during the Cold War, Indian ragas changing rock and roll in the 1960s, the folk music–inspired classical composers of the 19th and 20th centuries.

In this sweeping history compiled from more than a decade of travel, research, interviews, and deep listening, Boyd sets out to explore centuries of fascinating backstories to these sounds. He shows how personalities, events, and politics in places such as Havana, Lagos, Budapest, Kingston, and Rio are as colorful and momentous as anything that took place in New Orleans, Harlem, Laurel Canyon, or Liverpool. And, moreover, how jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock ‘n’ roll would never have happened if it weren’t for the notes and rhythms emanating from over the horizon. The one-of-a-kind result is And the Roots of Rhythm Remain: a glorious, symphonic celebration of the music that shapes our world.

JOE BOYD is a record producer and writer, known for his acclaimed memoir, White Bicycles. Artists he has produced include Nick Drake, R.E.M., Toots and the Maytals, Richard Thompson, Pink Floyd, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, and ¡Cubanismo! among many others over the course of a nearly sixty-year career.

After graduating from Harvard in 1964, he tour-managed Muddy Waters, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto, and others before serving as production manager for the historic 1965 Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals. He then moved to London to open Elektra Records’ office and started the famous UFO club, which became the center of London’s psychedelic revolution. In 1979 he launched his own label, Hannibal Records, which was at the forefront of bringing global artists to western audiences. As a film producer, his credits include Amazing Grace, Scandal, and Jimi Hendrix. A gifted raconteur, he appears frequently on radio, podcasts and documentaries.

Northern California-based My Nguyen needed nourishing food to keep up with two active toddlers, a demanding job, and a bustling household, but all of the diets she tried were too restrictive and time-consuming. So she stopped counting calories and started to define her own kind of healthy eating. Instead of building her meals around a carb like rice, noodles, or pasta (not totally intuitive for someone raised to believe a big bag of rice is the perfect housewarming gift!), she doubled down on lean proteins, vegetables, and ingredients like fresh herbs and condiments that boosted flavor. Now she shares her pragmatic but playful recipes that look as good as they taste to her millions of fans on her platform, My Healthy Dish.

Healthy, My Way offers more than 100 recipes that reflect this upbeat approach to cooking. “My Tips” are sprinkled throughout, offering pragmatic kitchen hacks, substitutions, techniques, and make-ahead notes to help you customize these recipes to your own palate and dietary needs. Healthy, My Way offers protein-packed breakfasts and snacks, bountiful bowls, easy weeknight meals, special sides, and fruit-forward sweets, including:
