Banned Books Reading

in collaboration with  PEN American Center West, an evening featuring local writers reading excerpts from famous banned books.
Saturday, September 8, 7:30pm

With school districts and libraries censoring books around the country, it's more important than ever to celebrate and assert our freedom to read. In honor of Banned Books Month, we are collaborating with  PEN American Center West (Brenda Webster, President) to host a reading. Local writers including Peter Orner, Camille Dungy, Carolyn Cooke, Tess Taylor, and Michael David Lukas will introduce and read a short excerpt from a writer who has been banned, censored, or imprisoned.

Some samples from the reading include: Allen Ginsberg's Howl, Alaa al-Aswany's Friendly Fire, Luis Alberto Urrea's The Devil's Highway, and Eskia Mphahlele's Down Second Avenue.

Please join us for vibrant readings and lively discussion about this most important aspect of our liberty.
